Day 2: Mystic, CT

Chris' back says that 1 hour car drives are enough. Hopefully a hot shower will help. A new lady at the front desk, must be the owner; can't imagine paying another employee with as little business. 'Cause of Covid no continental Breakfast, so that's first today. Then on to Seaport Museum.

Wow, what a breakfast! HUGE: Henry ordered the Hungry Man (2 French toast slices, 2 pancakes, 2 sausages, 2 eggs, and a slice of ham, with homefries), Watson got blueberry waffle with at least two berries per hole, Jessup and Chris got omelets that were folded twice, and I got California Benedict with a side of fruit. Yummy! And the restaurant was aptly named Mystic Diner.
We got to the Seaport Museum around 10:00 when it opened. Kind of like a tour of Old Salem or Historic Williamsburg (tiny homes with tradesman). Except that Mystic has lots of ships to climb aboard. The whaling ship was cool especially how they discussed the whale blubber being turned into oil. The ship was actually seaworthy and used until 2010. It has perhaps 2.5 million miles on it. It was at sea 80 years in a row, with 4 year stops each. A fire engine ship was just docked 4 years ago. We rang its bell.

Had a small snack in the canteen on site before our 30 minute catboat tour. Such a smooth sailing vessel with seating for us 5 and the captain. Learned the difference between a dagger board and a center board. How I wished I was in a Sunfish in my little pond back in Stoneville. Dad would have loved the trip.

We finished our tour of the Museum grounds after all the kids climbed or jumped off every possible structure, and then there was dinner.

Yes, we were in Mystic, but Mystic Pizza didn't sound the best, so we headed to the Engine Room. Here was my review on Google: "Brisket meal was a great big portion but lots of fat and gristle, mac and cheese was yummy but maybe too little cheese(never seen that before), burgers were actually smaller than usual which was a perfect portion, and lastly the fish and chips was HUGE and yummy. Best thing was the VERY comfortable wrap around couch seat for 6."

We then headed for an early retreat to our Taber Inn and Suites - a rented condo with a fabulous jacuzzi and an indoor pool facility. We all splashed around the pool; I even did a few half-laps. Fun for all, especially after Jessup's bloody toe, Henry's bloody lip, and lastly, Chris' nerves. Ended the night with an order from Mystic Pizza (Henry and Watson chose) and a grocery store run for breakfast items to the local Big Y.

  1. At last a day with no real messes. The food sounds like it was yummy. Reading is the best part of traveling in my opinion. Carry on.
